Michael Bernard (bottom center) The three most important elements for my
current style of painting: It is a wonder I have not been electrocuted. After receiving her MFA in 2003 Sandy co-founded Saltgrass Printmakers, a non- profit printmaking studio and gallery located in Sugarhouse, Utah. Since 2004 Brunvand has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Utah, Department of Art and Art History. When she is not creating prints or paintings, she might be playing bluegrass music, or most likely she can be found on her favorite trail in the hills with her dog, Scruggs and husband, Erik. My images in the last few years are a continuing response to my connection with this place, with these surroundings, and with the fundamental themes of human existence. My primary inspiration is drawn from my daily excursions into the hills around Salt Lake City where the small, fragile plant forms draw my attention more than the grand vistas. I include actual artifacts found on the trails. My fascination with the cast off evidence of man leads to these objects becoming the central icons of this work, and as such they are inserted into niches inset in the panels. Although these found objects are intrusions in the natural landscape, through their interaction with the environment and the action of decay they become integrated with their natural surroundings to become interesting forms in their own right. In these paintings I elevate these rusty pieces of debris to a level of gem-like status. Joey Behrens (lower right) www.JoeyBehrens.com I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. At the age of eighteen I moved to Salt Lake and in 2001 earned my BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah. I continue to live and work in Salt Lake dividing my time between painting, drawing, and printmaking. These three prints represent a shift in my work and a more responsive and intuitive approach to mark-making. I started these w/out any expectations and discovered a sense of adventure in the process and curiosity in the implied. Bill Lee (top center) www.tlegallery.com In the early 70's I got a summer job on a fantastic island in the Great Lakes. I lived in a turret high in an old Victorian that looked out over the water. I was so dazzled by the incredible daily change in the vista outside my window that I bought a camera with my first paycheck. "Art" had a permanent grip that even the ski bum in me couldn't shake loose. A few years later I was accepted to a well-known
photography school Then one day I stumbled onto a Kandinsky print in a garage sale. It was like being back in that old Victorian. I realized that I didn't have to draw well to paint what I wanted to paint. And here is some of it. Tessa Lindsey (top right) Tessa is an artist for the lifestyle. She is a recognized expert in fresco painting technique and a dedicated craft-person who works confidently in a variety of mediums and genres. In her work, language often arouses the image and serves to expand the realm of the narrative. She lives in a light filled, art deco apartment in the Avenues, and paints in her Tres Flores studio in Salt Lake City. Her work has shown widely, locally.
