Kathleen S. Ferdon

I studied visual art at the University of Connecticut, the University of California/Berkeley, and through the Fine Arts foundation at the University of Utah. My work is in private and commercial collections in California, Indiana and Utah.

Lately my work is divided between creatively raising two sons and creatively expressing myself through watercolors or acrylics. I am drawn to bold colors and simple shapes as an expression of an inner response to place, experience, dreams or memories. In particular, the watercolor "summer series" has to do with Clinton Beach, Connecticut, where I spent my summers throughout childhood. The water, sand, and sky refreshed my spirit, and gave me hope and possibility. The qualities of light around the water were a source of wonder.

The "quilt series" reflects the ways in which our lives are a patchwork of experiences, sometimes layered upon each other, some moments which stand on their own. I am trying to create a safe, nurturing foundation, both in my own home and as an artist. I hope they reflect a calming nature, some order in the chaos of any given day, and a bright place to relax.

In all cases I place a great deal of importance on expression of mood and trust my intuition to lead me in the best direction, while using color to convey most of what is trying to be expressed. Work in Progress

Cynthia Oliver

I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Utah in painting and drawing, but I was inspired by glass, because it can be both sculptural and painterly, and I continue to be fascinated by its potential to express whimsy, delight, and wonder.

The pieces I create are collages, visual riddles of color and texture that always contain a surprise. I think of my work as an escape, a playful moment in which you can lose yourself in vibrant color of transmitted or reflected light that delights the eye.

This series of windows is reminiscent of traditional leaded or stained glass, yet through the fusing process, I have achieved a distinctive sculptural effect, a seamless layering of glasses, overlapping of colors and textures in ways not found in stained or leaded glass windows.

Creating a piece of kiln-formed glass is a delicate exercise in physics, chemistry and art that continually places me on the edge of both success and failure. Ultimately, success is the creation of a work that entices you to delight in the interplay of light and color.
