I
think it is beneficial for my artistic mental health to
always be willing to wander in whatever direction my interests
take me. Although I expect to put many more miles on my
paintbrushes, right now I am returning to my original
love of drawing. This time I am challenging myself with
something less familiar to me in pastels. The fact that
I do not have to clean my brushes may have something to
do with this, but I also like the immediate results, and
color in such an undiluted form is really fun to work
with. As opposed to paint, which I normally mix until
I reach a sort of “ugly” palette, pastels
are mixed by the eye, directly on the surface. This interaction
of color requires a great deal of investigation and is
a subject I will study for a long time.
